| The Problem
–
The Florida
Housing Coalition and the Shimberg Center for
Affordable Housing report there are more than
730,000 low-income households in Florida struggling
to provide housing for their families. Many
households are paying more than half of their
incomes for shelter while others simply have
scarce, and sometimes nonexistent, housing options.

The Cause –
In 2002, median-priced Florida homes were affordable
to median-income Florida families. However,
in 2005, that was no longer true. Since 2002,
the cost of median-priced existing homes has
increased by 77%, while median income has increased
by only 1.4%. Thus, more families require more
housing assistance than just four years ago.
The Result –
The workforce is “priced out” of
the housing market. Communities suffer because
the workers required to make the community viable
become economically displaced. Our teachers,
nurses, medical technologists, retail workers,
government employees, firefighters and policemen
have to live elsewhere. Employees who can’t
afford housing near their jobs are burdened
with expensive and time-consuming commutes.
These individuals are the backbone of any community,
but without an affordable place to live, it
becomes economically impossible for them to
live in the very communities they serve.
The Opportunity –
Unlike manufactured homes (trailers/mobile
homes), modular homes are built on permanent
foundations, comply with all local and state
building codes.
